Heterogeneities in the Thickness of the Elastic Lithosphere of Mars: Constraints on Heat Flow and Internal Dynamics

چکیده
Derived values of the thickness of the effective elastic lithosphere on Mars are converted to estimates of lithospheric thermal gradients and surface heat flow by finding the thickness of the elastic-plastic plate having the same bending moment and curvature, subject o assumed strain rates and temperature-dependent flow laws for crustal and mantle matedhal. Local thermal gradients and heat flow values so estimated were 10-14 K km -1 and 25-35 mW m -2, respectively, at the time of formation of flexurally induced graben surrounding the Tharsis Montes and Alba Patera, while gradients and heat flow values of less than 5-6 K km -1 and 17-24 mW m -2, respectively, characterized the lithosphere beneath the Isidis mascon and Olympus Mons at the time of emplacement of these loads. On the basis of the mean global thickness of the elastic lithosphere inferred to support he Tharsis rise and estimates of mantle heat production obtained from SNC meteorites, it is suggested that the present average global heat flux on Mars is in the range 15-25 mW m -2. Approximately 3-5% of this heat flux during the Amazonian epoch has been contributed by excess conducted heat in the central regions of major volcanic provinces. Most likely, this excess heat flux has been delivered to the base of the lithosphere by mantle plumes. The fractional mantle heat transport contributed by plumes during the last 2 b.y. on Mars is therefore similar to that at present on Earth.

Present-day heat flow model of Mars
Until the acquisition of in-situ measurements, the study of the present-day heat flow of Mars must rely on indirect methods, mainly based on the relation between the thermal state of the lithosphere and its mechanical strength, or on theoretical models of internal evolution. Here, we present a first-order global model for the present-day surface heat flow for Mars, based on the radiogenic heat ...
متن کاملMars Is Not Dead: Mantle Convection Controls the Observed Lateral Variations in Lithospheric Thickness on Present-day Mars
Introduction Because the transition from elastic to viscous behavior in silicate materials is controlled by temperature [1], measurements of the thickness of a planet's elastic lithosphere (T E) provide important constraints on the thermal structure and evolution of the lithosphere. For Mars, surface geophysical measurements have not yet been made, so estimates of T E have been made using orbit...

Studies extending over three decades have concluded that the current orientation of the martian rotation pole is unstable. Specifically, the gravitational figure of the planet, after correction for a hydrostatic form, has been interpreted to indicate that the rotation pole should move easily between the present position and a site on the current equator, 90◦ from the location of the massive Tha...
متن کاملInternal structure and early thermal evolution of Mars from Mars Global Surveyor topography and gravity.
Topography and gravity measured by the Mars Global Surveyor have enabled determination of the global crust and upper mantle structure of Mars. The planet displays two distinct crustal zones that do not correlate globally with the geologic dichotomy: a region of crust that thins progressively from south to north and encompasses much of the southern highlands and Tharsis province and a region of ...
متن کاملThe early heat loss evolution of Mars and their implications for internal and environmental history
The time around 3.7 Ga ago was an epoch when substantial changes in Mars occurred: a substantial decline in aqueous erosion/degradation of landscape features; a change from abundant phyllosilicate formation to abundant acidic and evaporitic mineralogy; a change from olivine-rich volcanism to olivine-pyroxene volcanism; and maybe the cessation of the martian dynamo. Here I show that Mars also ex...
